What it means
What is a partial hospitalization program?
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) gives you a full day of mental health treatment, often five days a week, while you live at home or in supported living.
It sits between inpatient care and intensive outpatient (IOP), so it suits people who need more than weekly therapy but do not need to stay overnight.
The main difference from inpatient care is whether you go home at night or live on site.
Partial hospitalization (PHP)
You spend the day in treatment, often five days a week, and return home or to supported living each evening. It suits people who need intensive care without staying overnight.
Inpatient residential treatment
You live on site in a calm, home-like setting, with days of individual therapy, groups, and CBT and DBT skills work. It suits people who need a highly structured start.
Our admissions team can help you decide between a partial hospitalization program and inpatient care, or whether IOP would be enough.

When to consider it
Signs PHP may be the right level
A partial hospitalization program may be the right level of care if some of these signs sound like you.
- Weekly therapy isn't enough, and symptoms get in the way of your daily life.
- You are leaving inpatient care and want daily support while you settle at home.
- Work or school has become hard to manage, and you need a structured day.
- Drinking or drug use is happening alongside a mental health condition.
- A medication change needs regular review with your treatment team.
- You have a safe place to sleep and people who can support you at home.
Inpatient care may be safer if
- You or someone else may not be safe right now.
- You cannot get through a day at home.
- You've tried a day program and it wasn't enough.
If there is immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
What our PHP includes
This intensive treatment is built from these parts, and your clinical team shapes your plan around what you need.
Individual therapy
One-to-one sessions with a licensed therapist, where you work on what brought you to treatment.
Group therapy
Groups led by a licensed therapist, where you learn and practice coping strategies and life skills alongside other people in PHP.
Family therapy
Sessions that include parents, partners or other family members, when involving them would help.
Medication management
A licensed psychiatrist provides your psychiatric care, prescribing medication when it is part of your plan and reviewing how it is working.
CBT and DBT skills
Cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy teach emotional regulation and practical ways to handle thoughts and stress.
Dual diagnosis care
When substance use disorders are part of the picture, we treat them and the mental health condition in one plan.

Common questions about PHP
If your question is not answered here, call admissions at (714) 862-1907.
Do I sleep at home during PHP?
Yes. You spend the day in treatment and go home each evening, or to supported living if a structured home environment would help.
How long does PHP last?
It depends on how you're doing in treatment. Your clinical team works out a timeline with you during your assessment and adjusts it as you go.
Can I work or go to school during PHP?
PHP takes up most of the day, so it's hard to combine with a full-time job or school schedule. An outpatient program such as IOP fits around work or school, and many people move to it as they get steadier.
Is a partial hospitalization program worth it?
PHP is worth considering when weekly therapy isn't enough but you don't need to stay overnight. An assessment with our clinical team helps you decide whether it fits.
How do clinicians decide whether I need PHP?
An assessment looks at your symptoms, your safety and how daily life is going. Your clinical team recommends a level of care, and you decide whether to go ahead.
Can I move up from IOP to PHP if things get harder?
Yes. If symptoms get worse during IOP, your clinical team can talk with you about moving up to PHP, then back down when you are steadier.
What happens after PHP ends?
Most people step down to IOP, then to outpatient treatment, and your team plans that step and your relapse prevention with you before PHP ends. You can stay with Enhance for each step, so you don't have to start over somewhere new.
Does insurance cover PHP?
Coverage depends on your plan: your deductible, your copay and what your insurer approves. Call (714) 862-1907 or send the form above, and our admissions team checks your insurance benefits with your insurer before you decide anything.
Is medication part of PHP?
It can be. When medication is part of your plan, a licensed psychiatrist prescribes it and reviews how it is working.
Can PHP treat mental health and substance use together?
Yes. Dual diagnosis treatment means we treat mental health conditions and substance use together, in one treatment plan.
What should I look for in a PHP in Orange County?
Look for accreditation you can check, licensed clinicians, treatment for mental health and substance use together, and a plan for stepping down. Enhance is accredited by The Joint Commission, and one team runs PHP, IOP and outpatient care.
What does Joint Commission accreditation mean?
It means an independent nonprofit has reviewed the program against its standards for behavioral health care. You can look up Enhance's record, organization ID 660231, on the Joint Commission website.
