About kratom
What is kratom, and why does dependence happen?
NIDA describes kratom as a plant whose main compound, mitragynine, acts on the brain's opioid receptors. Regular use can lead to dependence, and stopping can cause withdrawal that is mild for some people and severe for others.
Supervised detox
You stop using kratom with clinical staff supervising you instead of alone. Detox gets you through withdrawal safely, and treatment for the use itself comes after.
Quitting at home
We do not recommend quitting alone or following a taper plan from an online forum. If you already feel sick when you skip a dose, call and ask whether supervised detox is right for you.

When to call
Common kratom withdrawal symptoms
NIDA and clinical reports describe symptoms like these. You may have fewer of them, or yours may be more severe.
- Muscle aches, sweating and a runny nose.
- Nausea, or trouble keeping food down.
- Irritability, anxiety and trouble sleeping.
- Strong cravings as soon as a dose is late.
- A low mood that seems out of proportion to what is happening.
Get urgent help if
- You may harm yourself.
- You cannot keep fluids down.
- You become confused or have a seizure.

Can buprenorphine be used?

How is kratom withdrawal different from opioid withdrawal?
Kratom acts on opioid receptors, so its withdrawal can look similar to opioid withdrawal, though it is sometimes milder. If you feel sick when you stop, that is reason enough to call admissions.
