What it means
What is inpatient mental health treatment?
Inpatient mental health treatment is care you receive while living at the treatment center, with therapy and medication management from a clinical team.
At Enhance it is residential mental health treatment, which is different from a stay on a hospital psychiatric unit.
Enhance is accredited by The Joint Commission for behavioral health care.
Inpatient residential treatment
You live on site in a calm, home-like environment rather than a hospital ward, with individual therapy and groups each day. It suits people who need more support than a day program can give.
Acute psychiatric hospitalization
A hospital psychiatric unit treats people in a mental health crisis, and stays there are usually short. Enhance is not a hospital, so if someone is in immediate danger, call 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Admissions can help you decide which level fits, and they'll tell you if a hospital would be safer.

When to consider it
Signs it may be time for inpatient care
We provide the inpatient mental health treatment Orange County adults need when symptoms or safety concerns become too hard to manage at home.
- Someone's safety is in question, and a safety plan at home has not worked.
- Symptoms make it hard to eat, sleep, wash or get through an ordinary day.
- Therapy or a day program was tried, and things are still getting worse.
- Drinking or drug use is making the symptoms worse, or the other way round.
- A medication change needs close monitoring because the last change went badly.
- The people at home are exhausted and cannot keep things safe on their own.
A day program may be enough if
- You sleep safely at home and can get to treatment.
- You still eat, sleep and stay in touch with people.
- You need more than weekly therapy but not constant care.

Inpatient mental health care takes place at Eden by Enhance, a sister facility owned and run by the same people as Enhance.
Eden follows the same clinical process as Enhance, so the plan you start there carries into PHP, IOP or outpatient care.

What you pay depends on your deductible, your copay and the level your insurer approves, so we cannot quote a daily rate before checking your plan. Admissions checks your benefits with the insurer and tells you the figures before you decide anything.

Common questions about inpatient care
When should someone go inpatient for mental health?
Inpatient care may fit when safety is in question, daily life has become hard to manage, or a day program has not helped enough.
What is the difference between inpatient and residential treatment?
At Enhance they are the same level of care under two names. In both, you live on site while you receive treatment.
What is a 5150 hold?
In California, a 5150 is an involuntary hold of up to 72 hours for a psychiatric evaluation. Inpatient care at Enhance is voluntary, and admissions can explain how the two differ.
How long does inpatient treatment last?
The length depends on your needs and progress, and your clinical team works it out with you as treatment goes on. It isn't fixed before you arrive.
Does insurance cover inpatient mental health treatment?
Many plans cover it, and how much depends on your deductible, your copay and what your insurer approves. Admissions checks this with the insurer before you decide anything.
Can I check myself in?
Yes, inpatient care at Enhance is voluntary, and you or a family member can start with a phone call. A hospital psychiatric unit works differently, and admissions will tell you if that's what you need.
Can I keep my job while I am in treatment?
Many people use protected medical leave through their employer, and HR can tell you what your job offers. Admissions can tell you what documentation is usually involved.
Do you treat substance use at the same time?
Yes, when you have both, we treat mental health and substance use together in one plan. This is called dual diagnosis.
