You may need medical detox if some of these signs sound like you, and admissions can help you decide.
- You feel shaky, sick, anxious or sweaty when you go without drinking or using.
- You have tried to stop before, and withdrawal made you start again.
- You drink heavily every day, or use opioids or benzodiazepines regularly.
- You have had a seizure, hallucinations or confusion when you stopped before.
- You mix substances, which makes withdrawal harder to predict.
- You have a heart, liver or other health condition that withdrawal could strain.

How long does detox take?
How long your detox program lasts depends on the substance, how much and how long you have used, and your health. Your clinical team gives you an estimate after your assessment.

Is detox alone enough to treat addiction?

It can be. Alcohol withdrawal and benzodiazepine withdrawal can cause seizures, which is why medical support is the safer choice for those substances.
